Father Pius Keating, S.A., a retired U.S. Navy chaplain who also was a pastor in North Carolina, died Jan. 17 at Carefree Manor in Carefree, Ariz. He was 90. He was chaplain at the U.S. Public Health Hospital on Staten Island from 1948 to 1951, when he began a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Father Keating was chaplain of the 11th Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; served for two years in the combat zone of the Korean War; and was chaplain of the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Md. Following his retirement from the Navy with the rank of commander, he was chaplain at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. He then was pastor for some 20 years at parishes in North Carolina. Born in Plymouth, Penn., he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor in 1937 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1946. He is survived by a sister, Helen Watts. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 22 at St. Stephen's Church in Plymouth. Burial was private.
