Sister Denisia Ahern, O.P., who taught art at several New York City schools, died Sept. 3 at the Dominican motherhouse in Sinsinawa, Wis. She was 79.

Between 1987 and 2005, she was an art teacher at a number of archdiocesan schools including St. Anthony’s and Our Lady of Mercy in the Bronx. In Manhattan, she taught at St. Paul’s, Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Lucy’s and St. Ann’s where she was also part of the support staff, 2005-2011. She was a teacher at the School of Visual Arts, also in Manhattan.

She served as an art therapist at two Manhattan hospitals, New York Hospital, 1992-1993, and St. Clare’s Hospital, 1999-2006.

Sister Denisia was a primary teacher and an art teacher as well as a member of the support staff at schools in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa.

Born in Chicago, she entered the Sinsinawa Dominicans in 1952 and professed final vows in 1958. She received a master’s degree in art education from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Ill., and a certificate in art therapy form the School of Visual Arts, New York.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 9 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa, followed by burial in the motherhouse cemetery.
