Sister Dorothy Cunnion, S.H.C.J.

Sister Dorothy Cunnion, S.H.C.J., who served as assistant superintendent of schools for the archdiocese in the 1970s, died Oct. 10 in Rosemont, Pa. She was 91.

Sister Dorothy worked at the archdiocesan Office of the Superintendent, 1973-1976, the last two years as assistant superintendent.

She served as business manager of St. Elizabeth parish, Manhattan, 1988-1990, and administrator of the Holy Child Sisters retirement community, Rye, 1982-1988. She provided pastoral ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Manhattan, 1976-1982, and was principal of Our Lady of Lourdes School, Manhattan, while also serving the provincial team of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus’ former New York Province, 1967-1973.

She taught at SS. Peter and Paul School, Mount Vernon, 1957-1967, and St. Walburga’s Academy, Manhattan, 1949-1952. She taught in Rosemont, Pa.

Her last active years were spent serving the congregation, Society of the Holy Child Jesus, as treasurer at the Sisters’ retirement community in Rye, 1999-2015. Sister Dorothy served the sick at Holy Child Center, Rosemont, 1990-1999.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in 1946 and professed final vows in 1954. She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, both from Villanova University.

Sister Dorothy is survived by her sister, Patricia Cunnion Smith. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 17 at Holy Child Chapel in Rosemont. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, Pa.
