Sister Ellen Marie Keane, R.S.H.M.

Sister Ellen Marie Keane, R.S.H.M., a philosophy teacher at Marymount College in Tarrytown for 41 years, died Aug. 5 at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown. She was 83.

She was at Marymount College, 1969-2008 and 1963-1965. She was mistress of novices for the Eastern American Province, 1965-1969.

She was a volunteer English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, taught in Marymount Manhattan College’s Bedford Hills Correctional Facility College Program and was a member of the Eastern American Province Leadership and Institute International Initial Formation teams.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1953 and professed final vows in 1960.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Marymount College and a master’s and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Her brother, Robert Keane, and her sister, Anne Marie Wagner, survive her.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 13 in Marymount Convent. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
