Sister Eugenia, Teacher Was 93

Sister Eugenia Sortino, A.S.C.J., who taught in the archdiocese for 14 years, died Oct. 14 at Sacred Heart Manor in Hamden, Conn. She was 93.

Sister Eugenia taught at Sacred Heart School, the Bronx, 1972-1973 and 1960-1965, and Our Lady of Pompeii, Manhattan, 1952-1960. She also served in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Missouri.

Born in Manhattan, Sister Eugenia entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1947 and professed her final vows in 1954.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in math from Fordham University, the Bronx, and a master’s in education from St. Louis University.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 17 in Sacred Heart Manor Chapel. Burial was in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, Conn.
