Sister Florence Dwyer, O.P., who taught at grade schools in the Bronx and was on the faculty at Dominican College of Blauvelt, died Dec. 27 at the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt. She was 98.

Sister Florence served as a member of the English department at Dominican College in Orangeburg, 1970-1977, and as director of evening sessions, 1977-1991. Upon retiring in 1991, she served in the congregation’s development office as a receptionist and a local community treasurer.

She taught elementary school in the Bronx at Our Lady of the Assumption, 1965-1970; St. Benedict, 1958-1965; St. Anselm, 1952-1958; and St. Luke, 1946-1952.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1943 and made final vows in 1948. She held a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Manhattan College, and a master’s in educational speech from Fordham University. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Purissima.

She is survived by her nieces, Patricia Petty and Teresa Coffin.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 4 at St. Dominic’s Convent in Blauvelt. Burial was at St. Dominic’s Cemetery.
