Sister Janet Carroll, M.M., who received a papal honor for her work with the Holy See’s Mission and served the U.S. Catholic China Bureau for 20 years, died May 28 at Cedar Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ossining. She was 85.
She received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1987 for her service to the Holy See’s Mission to the United Nations where she served, 1979-1987.
Sister Janet was executive director, senior associate and editor of China Church Quarterly at the U.S. Catholic China Bureau at Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J., 1989-2009. She was missiology network liaison for Maryknoll’s China programs, 2010-2019; Maryknoll Sisters research and planning director, 1972-1979; and served in Taiwan, 1968-1972 and 1956-1966.
In 2017, Sister Janet received the U.S. Catholic China Bureau’s Matteo Ricci Award for her role in building a bridge of friendship and service between the Catholic Church in the United States and China. In 2014, she was honored for serving the people of China and Taiwan with a lifetime achievement award from the American Missiology Society, an organization she served as board president, 1984-1985, and a founding board member in 1973.
Born in New York City, she graduated from St. Barnabas High School, the Bronx, before entering the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in 1952 and professing final vows in Taiwan in 1961.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from New York University and a master’s in international affairs from Yale University.
Her brother, Arthur, survives her.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated June 4 in the Main Chapel of the Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery, Maryknoll.
