Sister Joanne Deas, O.P.

Sister Joanne Deas, O.P., who served as administrator of Dominican Convent in Sparkill for 23 years until last year and also was principal of Our Lady of Grace School in the Bronx, died August 21 in Siena Hall at the convent. She was 82.

She was principal of Our Lady of Grace, 1970-1977, where she taught, 1960-1962. She also taught at St. Rose of Lima, Manhattan, 1967-1970 and 1955-1960, and St. Paul, Valley Cottage, 1962-1967.

Sister Joanne worked in Dominican Convent’s finance office, 1987-1994. She served as treasurer of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in Ossining, 1984-1987, and business manager at Albertus Magnus High School in Bardonia, 1977-1984.

Born in Mount Vernon, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1953 and professed final vows in 1960. She was formerly known as Sister Theresa Anne.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, and a master’s in supervision and administration from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 28 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in Sparkill. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.
