Sister John Catherine Arnold, O.P.

Sister John Catherine Arnold, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope who served as principal and teacher at Regina Coeli School in Hyde Park for 22 years, died Feb. 12 at St. Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell, N.J. She was 87.

She was principal of Regina Coeli, 1976-1985, and also taught there, 1955-1968. She taught at St. Thomas of Canterbury School, Cornwall-on-Hudson, 1968-1976, and Annunciation, Crestwood, 1953-1955. She also was director of a school in Palisades, N.J., 1985-2003.

She provided pastoral care to the sick and homebound at St. Columba parish, Hopewell Junction, 2003-2010.

Born in Newburgh, she entered the Dominican Sisters there in 1951 and made final vows in 1956.

She held bachelor’s degrees in elementary education from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., and in home economics from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. She had a master’s in education from SUNY Buffalo.

She is survived by a sister, Rose Arnold, and a brother, Michael.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 19 at Most Holy Rosary Chapel in Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh. Burial was at the Dominican Sisters’ Cemetery.
