Sister Madeleine Cain, R.S.H.M.

Sister Madeleine Cain, R.S.H.M., who taught music at levels from kindergarten though college, died May 22 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. She was 89.

She taught at Marymount School, Manhattan, 1976-1985; and Marymount Secondary School, Tarrytown, 1970-1976. She was a music teacher and accompanist at Marymount College, Tarrytown, 1947-1963. She was also a part-time teacher at Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Elmsford, 1992-2010.

Over the years, she was the accompanist for musical performances at several other schools including Mother Butler Memorial High School, the Bronx, and The Ursuline School, New Rochelle.

Sister Madeleine also taught in Richmond, Va., 1967-1968, and was one of the founding community of Marymount College, Boca Raton, Fl., 1963-1967 and 1968-1970.

She served her community as provincial treasurer from 1985 to 1992.

Born in Washington, D.C., she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1945 after graduating from Marymount College, Tarrytown. She made final vows in 1952.

Formerly known as Sister St. George, she received a master’s degree in music/education from Teachers College of Columbia University.

A Funeral Mass was offered May 31 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
