Sister Margaret Frances Kulage, M.M.

Sister Margaret Frances Kulage, M.M., who was a missioner to Hawaii and the Philippines, died Aug. 28 at Maryknoll Sisters Home Care IV at Maryknoll. She was 107.

At the time of her death, she was the eldest Maryknoll Sister.

She served in catechetics, pastoral work and as a teacher in Hawaii. She served on Oahu, in Waialua, 1943-1945, and Kalihi Kai, 1945-1953, and again, as superior, 1962-1965. She served at Wailuku on Maui, 1965-1966.

She served as assistant superior at the motherhouse, 1953-1959. From 1959 to 1962 she served as superior of St. Teresa’s Convent, a residence for Maryknoll Sisters. She served in administration at the motherhouse, 1967-1969.

She was missioned to the Philippines in 1969, where she taught at Maryknoll College, Manila, and as principal of an elementary school in Santiago City, Isabella, 1970-1972. She served as secretary to the Maryknoll Fathers’ Regional superior and coordinator for the Maryknoll Sisters in Davao, 1972-1978. She worked in prison ministry from 1979 to 1990.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1929 and professed final vows in 1934. A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 3 at Annunciation Chapel in the Maryknoll Sisters Center, with burial in the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
