Sister Marie Helena Phelan, O.P., who taught at several elementary schools in the archdiocese, died Dec. 27 at Dominican Convent, Sparkill. She was 96.
She was a teacher at St. Paul’s School, Valley Cottage, 1971-1993, and continued there as a volunteer until 2007, when she retired to Siena Hall at Dominican Convent in Sparkill.
She taught at St. Anthony’s, Yonkers, 1962-1968, and St. James, Carmel, 1954-1958. She also was a teacher in the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Born in New York City, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1941 and professed final vows in 1947.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Manhattan College.
A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 31 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill, with burial at St. Agnes Cemetery.
