Sister Mary Elizabeth Kenny, S.C.

Sister Mary Elizabeth Kenny, S.C., who served as a history teacher and chairperson of the history department at four high schools in the archdiocese, died Aug. 27 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. She was 86.

She served as chair of the history department of Blessed Sacrament High School, Manhattan, 1964-1966; Cathedral High School, Manhattan, 1966-1973; St. Gabriel’s High School, New Rochelle, 1973-1976; and St. Barnabas High School, the Bronx, 1957-1962.

She served as a teacher and librarian at St. Peter’s High School, Staten Island, 1991-1994. She taught at St. John the Evangelist School, Manhattan, 1953-1956.

She served as a volunteer at the College of Mount St. Vincent, 1994-2005.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1946 and was known as Sister Thomas Maureen. She professed final vows in 1951.

She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master’s degree in American history from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 30 at Mary the Queen Convent, with burial in Mount St. Vincent Cemetery.
