Sister Mary Elizabeth Mulligan R.S.H.M.

Sister Mary Elizabeth Mulligan R.S.H.M., who taught and was a principal in the archdiocese and later was a longtime library staff member at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., died Dec. 6 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. She was 87.

In the Bronx, she taught at Sacred Heart of Mary Academy, 1954-1959, and Mother Butler Memorial High School, 1959-1965, where she was principal, 1965-1967. She also taught at St. Thomas Aquinas School, the Bronx, 1952-1954.

She earlier taught in Brooklyn and Long Island City, Queens.

In Rome, Italy, she was assigned to Marymount International School, where she taught, 1967-1977, and was bursar, 1977-1983.

Returning to the United States she joined the library staff at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., where she served for 17 years. In 2000, she moved to Marymount Convent.

Born in New York City, she attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Marymount College, Tarrytown, and a master’s in education from Fordham University.

She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1943 and professed final vows in 1950. She was formerly known as Sister Jerome.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 10 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
