Sister Mary Mark Lowery, I.H.M.

Sister Mary Mark Lowery, I.H.M., who taught at an elementary school on Staten Island, died Aug. 17 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 88.

She was a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School on Staten Island, 1990-2000. She also taught in Queens, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maryland. She was a principal in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

She was director of resident services, 2011-2013, and administrator, 2000-2011, of the I.H.M. Center in Scranton, and formation director for the I.H.M. congregation in Scranton, 1974-1978.

Born in Pittsburgh, she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1948 and made final vows in 1954. She was formerly known as Sister Mary St. Mark.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and English, and a master’s in education from Marywood College in Scranton, and a certificate in administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

She is survived by a brother, Brother Mark Lowery, F.S.C.A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 22 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. Interment followed at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
