Sister Michael Ann Cladek, O.C.D., a former prioress of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns and member of the Monastery of the Incarnation in Beacon, died Jan. 17. She was 81.

In addition to her role as prioress, she served the community in a multitude of ways, including as formation directress, assistant infirmarian, librarian, calligrapher and gardener. From 1995 to 1997 she was coordinator of Carmelite Communities Associated.

In 1982, the Carmelite community in the Bronx moved to Beacon and in 2000 the Carmels of Beacon and Saranac Lake in New York, and Barre, Vt., formed the Carmel of the Incarnation. Sister Michael Ann was chosen as prioress to lead the new community. She had also served as prioress of the Carmel of St. Joseph in the Bronx.

Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., she entered the Carmel of St. Joseph in the Bronx in 1955 and made final vows in 1966.

She earned a bachelor’s in education from New Jersey State Teachers’ College in Trenton and a master’s in pastoral counseling from Iona College.

She is survived by her brother, William, and sister, Marcella Kimmick.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 22 at the chapel of Incarnation Monastery. Burial was at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont.
