Sister Paracleta Sweeney, O.P.

Sister Paracleta Sweeney, O.P., a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt for 75 years, who served as head of the congregation and twice was a school principal, died Aug. 24 in St. Martin de Porres Community at St. Dominic Convent in Blauvelt. She was 92.

Sister Paracleta served as major superior for the congregation, 1975-1979, and as first councilor, 1971-1975.

She was principal of St. John School, Goshen, 1979-1999, where she also was a Latin teacher, 1999-2002, and St. Pius High School, the Bronx, 1969-1971. She also served at St. John the Evangelist parish, Goshen, 2002-2004.

Sister Paracleta also taught at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, the Bronx, 1964-1969; St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, the Bronx, 1951-1959; and St. Benedict, the Bronx, 1946-1951. She also taught in Daytona Beach, Fla.

In 2004, she returned to St. Dominic Convent, where she served her religious community.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt in 1944 and made final vows in 1948. She held a master’s in education from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 29 at St. Dominic’s Convent in Blauvelt. Burial was at St. Dominic Convent Cemetery.
