Sister Verona Harmer, O.P.

Sister Verona Harmer, O.P., who served as a child care worker at St. Dominic’s Home in Blauvelt, died Sept. 24 in St. Martin de Porres Community in Blauvelt. She was 89.

She was a member of the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt for 65 years.

At St. Dominic’s Home, Sister Verona served as a teacher’s aide at St. Dominic’s School, 1972-1975, and assistant group mother, 1955-1963. At St. Anne’s Villa, she served as supervisor of group living, 1970-1971, and cottage mother, 1963-1970.

She held various positions at St. Dominic’s Convent, Blauvelt, 1975-2010, including sacristan, infirmary worker, household manager, switchboard operator and support services.

In 2010, Sister Verona became a resident of St. Martin de Porres Community, where she lived until her death.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1953 and professed final vows in 1959. She held an associate’s degree from Dominican College in Orangeburg.

Several cousins survive her. A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 26 at St. Dominic’s Convent. Burial was at St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
