Sister Vianney Stewart, R.S.H.M.

Sister Vianney Stewart, R.S.H.M., who taught in the archdiocese and all over the world, died Aug. 2 at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown. She was 91.

She taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Manhattan, 1955-1957, and served as principal of Marymount School, Tarrytown, 1966-1968. She also taught in Brooklyn and Long Island as well as internationally in London, Paris and in Colombia.

She later served on the staff of Cormaria Retreat House in Sag Harbor, 1998-2000.

Born in Galway, Ireland, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1938 and professed final vows in 1945. She held a bachelor’s degree in history from Marymount College, Tarrytown, and master’s degrees in American history from St. John’s University and in administration from New York University. She received recognition from the United Kingdom Department of Education and Science for her knowledge of American history.

One sister, Sister Declan Stewart, M.S.H.R., of Dublin, survives her. A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 7 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
