St. Joseph-St. Thomas Sweeps Varsity Division at CYO Championships

St. Joseph-St. Thomas won the Varsity Division’s overall routine and cheer competitions at the archdiocese’s CYO Cheerleading Championships at the College of Staten Island March 25.

Twelve parishes participated, with 10 from Staten Island, one from the Bronx (Our Lady of the Assumption) and one from Westchester County. Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima, the Westchester County representative, competed as an exhibition team and was not scored.

The varsity division was one of three divisions, which crowned an overall winner and a cheer winner for the non-musical and non-stunting portion of a routine.

St. Joseph-St. Thomas captured the Varsity Division’s overall routine for cheerleaders up to and including eighth-graders with a score of 89.90. Our Lady Help of Christians tipped St. Clare for second place, 81.50-81.45, and Our Lady Star of the Sea (78.80) and St. Charles (75.50) rounded out the top five.

Our Lady Star of the Sea was the overall routine champion with a 78.90 and cheer winner in the Debs Division for cheerleaders up to and including sixth-graders. St. Charles was second with 77.55, followed by St. Joseph/St. Thomas with 72.40, St. Clare with 69.10 and Our Lady Queen of Peace with 59.85.

In the Biddy Division for cheerleaders in fourth grade and under, St. Patrick claimed the overall championship, with Our Lady Star of the Sea winning the cheer title. St. Patrick finished with 69.00, and Holy Child and St. Clare were second and third, respectively, with 65.75 and 61.95. St. Charles placed fourth with 61.35, and Our Lady Star of the Sea was fifth with 59.50.
