Staten Island CYO Teams Claim Seven Basketball Titles

Sacred Heart won three titles and St. Teresa captured two, leading Staten Island to seven victories in the 12 CYO New York archdiocesan basketball championships.

The championship games for grades four through eight were held March 16 at Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island. The third-grade championship games were March 10 at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx.

Third-grade girls — Abigail Robisky and Olivia Bruno-Dunn each scored eight points as St. Charles, Staten Island, defeated St. Paul, Congers, 24-12. Lila Gilbart and Elise Aiken each had four points for St. Paul.

Third-grade boys — Ian Archbold’s 15 points led Sacred Heart, Staten Island, to a 29-26 win over St. Catharine of Alexandria, Blauvelt. Christian Sanchez’s 12 points paced St. Catharine of Alexandria.

Fourth-grade girls — Patricia Hansen scored six points for St. Barnabas, the Bronx, in an 18-13 victory over St. Paul, Congers. Natalia Clemente had six points for St. Paul.

Fourth-grade boys — Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, defeated St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 40-26, behind 11 points from John Paturzo and 10 points from Michael Abreu. Tyler Wein had 12 points for St. Gregory Barbarigo.

Fifth-grade girls — Carley Voce scored 11 points as St. Francis of Assisi, West Nyack, defeated St. John the Evangelist, Mahopac, 29-25. Niamh Kelleher led St. John the Evangelist with eight points.

Fifth-grade boys — Ray Fernandez finished with 12 points as St. Gregory the Great, Harrison, defeated St. Catharine of Alexandria, Blauvelt, 38-27. Ryan O’Connor led St. Catharine of Alexandria with 10 points.

Sixth-grade girls — St. Columbanus, Cortlandt Manor, defeated St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 31-24, behind Cadence Nicholas’ 12 points. Olivia Locurto paced St. Gregory Barbarigo with eight points.

Sixth-grade boys — Isaiah James’ 15 points led Sacred Heart, Staten Island, to a 48-37 victory over St. Mary, Mother of the Church, Fishkill. Nathaniel Stickle and Matt Partridge had 14 and 11 points, respectively, for St. Mary, Mother of the Church.

Seventh-grade girls — Olivia Schmitt and Princess Akojenu scored 14 points apiece for Sacred Heart, Staten Island, in a 53-24 victory over St. Catharine of Alexandria, Blauvelt. Tara Murphy added 12 points for Sacred Heart. Sophia Malpeli led St. Catharine of Alexandria with nine points.

Seventh-grade boys — Nico Pena scored 24 points for St. Teresa, Staten Island, in a 43-35 victory over St. Peter, Haverstraw. Dudley Lapointe had 18 points for St. Peter.

Eighth-grade girls — St. Teresa, Staten Island, beat St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 30-25, behind Nicole Melious’ 18 points. Alex Sullivan scored 12 points for St. Gregory Barbarigo.

Eighth-grade boys — Bryce Simmons scored the game-winner in overtime as St. Raymond, the Bronx, tipped Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, 44-42. Jayden Williams and Simmons finished with 19 and 15 points, respectively, for St. Raymond. For Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, David Alexandre had 27 points.
