Thomas J. Moran

Thomas J. Moran, who served as chief executive officer of Mutual of America for 21 years and was a supporter of Catholic causes, died Aug. 12. He was 65.

Mr. Moran had a 43-year career with Mutual of America, beginning in 1975. He served the company as CEO, 1995-2016, chairman of the board, 2005-2018, and president, 1992-2016.

He received the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award in 2012 from the National Catholic Educational Association for his philanthropic support of Catholic education and the Terence Cardinal Cooke Medal in 1996 for distinguished service in health care from New York Medical Center in Valhalla. He was presented a medal of honor from Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.

Mr. Moran served the archdiocese on the boards for The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation and New York Catholic Foundation. He was known as a champion for educational organizations, including the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.

From 2001 to 2017, Mr. Moran chaired the board of Concern Worldwide U.S. and served on the board of directors for Concern Worldwide in Ireland. Concern Worldwide is a humanitarian organization that has a mission of working toward the elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries. He received the Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2015.

He received honorary doctorates from Manhattan College; the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx; Mount Mary College, Milwaukee; National University of Ireland and Queens University Belfast.

Born on Staten Island, he attended St. Joseph Hill Academy and graduated from Msgr. Farrell High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in math from Manhattan College.

His wife of 35 years, Joan; his mother, Lillian Moran; brother, Jack; and sister, Bess Zampella, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 17 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Burial was private.
