Vin Scully Receives Gabriel Award

Longtime Dodgers announcer Vin Scully is the recipient of the 2016 Gabriel Award from the Catholic Academy Communication Professionals at the Catholic Media Conference in St. Louis on June 2.

Scully, 88, was honored for his work and lengthy broadcasting career, especially in helping to uplift the human spirit. He is retiring at the end of the season after 67 years as the voice of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers.

He was profiled in CNY’s May 12 issue.

Scully, a devoted Catholic who grew up in Manhattan as a fan of the New York Giants, is a graduate of Fordham Prep and Fordham University in the Bronx.

Scully, voted Broadcaster of the Century in 2000 by the American Sportscasters Association, won the Ford C. Frick Award in 1982 to earn entrance into the broadcasters’ wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
