William A. Woods, a devoted husband and father and fine Christian gentleman, died Aug. 29 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. He was 83.

The father of Catholic New York’s Editor in Chief, John Woods, he is also survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary; a daughter, Donna Kruel; and five grandchildren.

A convert to Catholicism as a young man, Mr. Woods was a 50-year parishioner of St. Brigid’s in Westbury, where he and his wife resided. He was a devoted Scripture reader and ordered his life very much according to love of God and neighbor, especially those in need.

He volunteered his gardening talents in service on the parish grounds and also served as an usher in recent years.

An avid outdoorsman in his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and spent much time boating in the waters of the Long Island Sound.

A lifelong resident of Long Island, he was born in Glen Cove and grew up in Locust Valley, where he worked for more than 40 years on a private estate, first as a chauffeur and then as a landscaper.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 2 at St. Brigid’s Church. Burial was in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
