Visitors to St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan should be aware that the church they see is not the one Mother Seton knew. (CNY, Editor’s Report, Jan. 16). The present church was built around 1836, and she had died in 1821. But Vallejo’s painting of the Crucifixion over the main altar dates from the original church, a gift from the archbishop of Mexico City in 1789. Mother Seton wrote about being moved by this picture.
