Bertha (Limo) Newman, founder of La Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros (The Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles) in the New York area, died July 3. She was 88.

Born in Chiclayo, Peru, she immigrated to New York in 1965, when she met her future husband, William Newman, in Queens. They raised five daughters and opened several businesses.

She later founded the Hermandad group, based in Queens and popular in the entire New York metro area, leading to Masses at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and other parish churches each October. The group’s mission is based on Catholic Peruvian tradition.

In 2010 she received the Catholic Migration Services Shining Star Award from the Diocese of Brooklyn.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years. She is survived by her five daughters, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was offered July 9 at St. Sebastian's parish in Woodside, Queens. Burial was at the Calverton National Cemetery, in Calverton, L.I.
