Deacon Arnold “Arnie” K. Hyland, who served at St. Mary of the Snow-St. Joseph parish in Saugerties for 21 years, died at HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley in Kingston. He was 84.

Deacon Hyland was at St. Mary of the Snow-St. Joseph, 1999-2020. He was involved in the parish’s sacramental and liturgical life, serving as chairman of the Right to Life Committee, house and building committee, Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal, parish budget and finance committee and Bingo committee.

He was on the board of directors of the Saugerties Well Thrift Store, moderator for the Compassionate Bereavement Group, chaplain of the Saugerties Police Department and chairman of the Christmas Food Basket program for more than 30 years. He assisted with the annulment process in the parish, was a member of the parish building and grounds committee and a two-term grand knight of the Knights of Columbus.

He was ordained a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Albany in 1979 and was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1999.

Born in the Bronx, he was a self-employed insurance broker and owner of the Arnie Hyland Agency. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Lamouree Hackett Post 72 American Legion in Saugerties. He also volunteered for the ARC in Catskill.

His wife of 65 years, Pat; and his sister, Maryann, survive him. He also is the brother-in-law of Msgr. John Farley, a retired priest of the archdiocese.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 25 at St. Mary of the Snow Church. Auxiliary Bishop Gerardo Colacicco was the principal celebrant, and Father Chris Berean, pastor of St. Mary of the Snow-St. Joseph, delivered the homily. Burial was in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery.
