Deacon Phillip J. Maroon

Deacon Phillip J. Maroon, who served two parishes on Staten Island for a total of  27 years, died Dec. 17. He was 75.

Deacon Maroon was assigned to St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus, 2007-2017, and St. Rita, 1990-2007. Ordained by Cardinal John O’Connor in 1990, he faithfully participated in the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish. He was involved with ministry with the youth and visited the homebound and nursing homes.

Born in Brooklyn, he was an insurance underwriter for Kemper Insurance Company for more than 30 years.

Deacon Maroon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy; sons James and Phillip; a sister, Mary; and a r, Stephen.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 22 at St. Rita’s Church. Retired Auxiliary Bishop John J. O’Hara was the celebrant, and Father Eugene J. Carrella, pastor of St. Rita’s, served as homilist. Burial was in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island.
