Father Arthur Welton

Father Arthur Welton, who served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier parish in the Bronx for 11 years, died Jan. 19 in his sleep. He was 78.

Father Welton was at St. Francis Xavier, 1998-2009, and most recently served as parochial vicar of St. Philip Neri, the Bronx, from 2009 until his retirement in 2018.

He was parochial vicar of Visitation, the Bronx, 1989-1998; St. Frances of Rome, the Bronx, 1985-1989; Our Lady of Mercy, Port Chester, 1980-1985; Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale, 1978-1980; Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, 1969-1978; and Immaculate Conception, Woodbourne, 1969.

Born in Manhattan, he studied for the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, and was ordained by Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1969.
His brother, John, and his sister, Elizabeth, survive him.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 27, in the main chapel of the John Cardinal O’Connor Pavilion. Cardinal Dolan will serve as the celebrant, and Msgr. Edward Weber will deliver the homily. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
