Father John J. Sullivan, M.M.

Father John J. Sullivan, M.M., who served in Hong Kong for many years as a Maryknoll missioner, died Aug. 9 in the Assisted Living Unit at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 87.

Father Sullivan’s Hong Kong mission serving refugees from China began in 1960. Over the decades he continued serving in Hong Kong intermittently, sometimes also working in administrative positions at Maryknoll and in Washington, D.C. Also in Hong Kong, he served as parochial vicar in several parishes. He also worked as a retreat coordinator in the Holy Land for 10 years ending in 2008.

Born in Queens, he entered the Maryknoll Fathers in 1949 and made final vows in 1959. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1960.

His body was donated to New York Medical College in Valhalla for medical research. A Memorial Mass was offered Aug. 13 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll.
