Father Philip O’Shea, O.F.M.

Father Philip O’Shea, O.F.M., who served at St. Stephen of Hungary parish in Manhattan for one year, died Nov. 16 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. He was 88.

Father O’Shea was at St. Stephen, 1984-1985. He also served in Allegany and East Aurora as well as in New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Born in Maiden, Mass., he entered a unit of the Order of Friars Minor that ministered to Eastern Rite Catholics in 1971. He transferred to the Franciscans’ Holy Name Province in 1984. He professed final vows in 1975 and also was ordained that year.

He earned a bachelor’s degree and doctorate from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and received master’s degrees from Fordham University, the Bronx, and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, where he studied theology.

Father O’Shea donated his body to New York Medical College, Valhalla. A Memorial Mass was celebrated Nov. 30 at St. Anthony Church, Butler, N.J.
