A recent letter (CNY, Jan. 30) denigrated the “brand of Catholicism” of certain individuals as a way to criticize their political positions. As Pope Francis pointed out to American bishops in a recent ad limina visit to Rome, Catholics need to avoid letting the angry rhetoric from a polarized society seep into discussions about the life of the Church. I do not think the publication of such a letter in Catholic New York was appropriate.
