She Met Father Duffy

Posted

I read with interest the article by Christie L. Chicoine about Father Francis Duffy (CNY, July 5).

My father, John Burke, was a member of the Fighting 69th who served in World War I. He was in the trenches when Joyce Kilmer was killed. My father was wounded in the same battle.

When I was about six years old (I am now 90), he took me to a reunion of the 69th Regiment and I shook hands with Father Duffy and “Wild” Bill Donovan. My dad was thrilled to introduce me to these two great men. I still remember it to this day.

God bless the members of the Fighting 69th Regiment. My husband is Deacon John Maloney, who just completed his 45th year as a deacon. He was ordained in the first class of permanent deacons, in 1973.
