Sheen Center Livestream Talk, ‘Black Mothers and Their Sons’ on June 10

Actress and playwright Angela Polite will discuss her play, “Mary Speaks” and what it means to be an artist of faith and an artist of color at such a pivotal moment in history in the United States, in a livestream conversation with David Di Certo, interim executive director of the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture in lower Manhattan Wednesday, June 10, at 3 p.m.

“Black Mothers and Their Sons” is part of the Sheen Center’s Faith, Hope and Love Talk Series. The playwright explores the history of Black mothers and their sons in America, through a spiritual Marian lens. In the person of the Blessed Mother, she finds inspiration for the struggle of all Black mothers working to raise and keep their sons alive in a hostile world, infusing the historical journey from slavery to the present day with the redemptive resonance of a mother’s love.

During the celebration of his 90th birthday, Poetry in America—Live will turn the spotlight on Stephen Sondheim’s song “Finishing The Hat” from “Sunday in the Park with George.” The livestream event, presented by The Sheen Center and Poetry in America on Friday, June 12, at 3 p.m., will celebrate the work of Sondheim through performances of his songs and discussion of the lyrics to this particular song. PBS’ “Poetry in America” host Elisa New welcomes Tony Award nominee Melissa Errico, New Yorker staff writer and author Adam Gopnik and noted musical director Tedd Firth. Ms. Errico, who has starred in “Sunday in the Park,” will perform three songs from the show, accompanied by Firth.

Christian singer-songwriter Hannah Schaefer, a multi international award winner, shares a powerful message about finding strength and continuing to push through during these difficult times with her song “Warrior” on YouTube Friday, June 12, at noon, in conjunction with the Sheen Center’s Faith, Hope and Love Music Series.
