Sister Barbara Armstrong, S.C.C., who served at Immaculate Conception School in the Bronx for 21 years, died April 3 at the motherhouse in Mendham, N.J. She was 86.
Sister Barbara was at Immaculate Conception, 1994-2006, 1969-1976 and 1966-1968, serving as a librarian, teacher, vice principal and superior.
She was at Mother Cabrini High School, Manhattan, 1980-1981; Sacred Heart of Mary High School, the Bronx, 1976-1980; and St. Peter’s School, Kingston, 1968-1969. She also served in Pennsylvania.
Born in Poughkeepsie, she entered the Sisters of Christian Charity in 1951 and professed final vows in 1960. She was formerly known as Sister Thomas Aquinas.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Misericordia College, Dallas, Pa., and a master’s in pedagogy from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.
Her brothers, Charles and Joseph, and sisters, Louise Mensler and Mary Hart, survive her as well as a cousin, Sister Mary Joseph Schultz, S.C.C.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated April 7 at the motherhouse. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery.
