Sister Helen McTaggart, S.C., who served as a teacher and later as an attorney, died Jan. 28 at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry. She was 89.

Sister Helen was at Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1972-1974; St. Agatha Home, Nanuet, 1970-1972; and St. Peter School, Staten Island, 1957-1960.

She was an attorney for 32 years, serving many years in New York state and had a full-time private practice from 2001 until her retirement in 2006.

She also served in the Diocese of Brooklyn, both as a teacher and an attorney, and taught in the Bahamas.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1951 and professed final vows in 1959.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx; a master’s in European history from Fordham University, the Bronx; and a law degree from St. John’s University, Queens. She was admitted to the New York State bar in 1978.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 2 in St. Margaret of Cortona Church, the Bronx. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
