Sister Joan Stellern, O.P.

Sister Joan Stellern, O.P., who served as a religious education teacher and administrator, as well as a librarian, died Dec. 24 in Siena Hall at Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 92.

Sister Joan was director of religious education at St. Pius X parish in Scarsdale for five years ending in 1989. She was a staff member of St. Joseph Villa retreat house in Saugerties, 1983-1984.

She served as a librarian at Aquinas High School, the Bronx, 1976-1983, and a teacher and librarian at Rosary Academy, Sparkill,1971-1976. She taught at Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, 1968-1971; Cathedral High School, Manhattan, 1968-1970, and St. Columba, Chester, 1949-1950.

Sister Joan also taught at schools in Missouri in the 1950s and 1960s. She served at the congregation’s development office in Sparkill in the 1970s.

Born in St. Louis, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1947 and professed final vows in 1954. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Webster College in Webster Groves, Mo.,a master’s in history from St. Louis University, and a master’s in legal studies from St. John’s University. She was formerly known as Sister Richard Marie.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements were private. Burial was at St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill.
