Sister Joan Uhlen, M.M.

Sister Joan Uhlen, M.M., who served in Nicaragua for 36 years, died Aug. 12 at Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining. She was 95.

Sister Joan was assigned to Nicaragua, 1972-2008. She did pastoral work and adult education and served as regional coordinator for the Panama/Nicaragua/El Salvador Region in the Maryknoll Sisters Regional House. She also served in Hawaii and Mexico.

Born in St. Louis, Sister Joan entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1942 and professed final vows in 1948. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryknoll Teachers College, Ossining, and a master’s from Fordham University, the Bronx.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 16 in Annunciation Chapel at Maryknoll Sisters Center. Burial was in Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
