Sister Katherine Bernard Gaffney, O.P., who served as co-administrator/director of the Corazon Community in Glasco for 30 years, died Jan. 1 in Siena Hall in Sparkill. She was 91.

Sister Katherine Bernard served the Corazon Community, a spirituality and hospitality program of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, 1982-2012. She was a member of sisters’ executive team, 1972-1980.

She was science chairperson and professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, 1968-1972. She also taught at Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, 1957-1964; St. Rose of Lima School, Manhattan, 1953-1957; and St. Brendan, the Bronx, 1948-1953. She also served in Rhode Island.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1946 and professed final vows in 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University; a master’s in chemistry from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.; and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Her sister, Katherine Ryan, survives her. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 8 in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill. Burial followed in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.
