Sister Margaret Chiffriller, C.S.JB.

Sister Margaret Chiffriller, C.S.JB., who served as provincial superior of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist from the 1970s to 1990s, died Dec. 7 at Providence Rest Nursing Home in the Bronx. She was 88.

Sister Margaret Mary served intermittently as provincial superior for Sisters of St. John the Baptist from the early 1970s into the 1990s. She was vicar of the congregation’s American Province, 1969-1972.

She served as an elementary and high school teacher at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island, 1951-1962. She later was principal and taught at a school in Gloversville.

In the Bronx, she served as superior of Providence Rest Convent, 1999-2002, and St. Dominic Convent, 1993-1999.

In later years, she was director of Providence Rest child day care, and led the home’s spiritual care department.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in 1946 and made final vows in 1956.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 12 at Providence Rest Convent Chapel. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
