Sister Maria Magdalena Fontán, R.C.D, who served at Ascension parish in Manhattan for 13 years, died April 2 in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. She was 90.

Sister Maria served primarily as a catechist and in other parish ministry roles. She was at Ascension, 1970-1983, and also served at St. Teresa,

Manhattan, 1999-2001 and 1983-1985; Our Lady of Esperanza, Manhattan, 1983-1987; Our Lady of Victory, the Bronx, 1966-1970; and St. Patrick’s Verplanck, 1964-1966.

She also served in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Born in Puerto Rico, she entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine in 1960 and professed final vows in 1968. She was formerly known as Sister Marita Rose of Nazareth.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh.

Burial was in Morovis, Puerto Rico. A Memorial Mass is being planned for a later date in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel at Dominican Convent, Sparkill.
