Sister Marie James McCallen, R.S.M., who was a nurse and a director of nursing in the archdiocese, died Aug. 15 at McAuley Hall in Watchung, N.J. She was 83.

Sister Marie James served as head nurse of obstetrics at Mercy Community Hospital, Port Jervis, 1977-1987. She was director of nursing at St. Francis Hospital, Port Jervis, 1962-1968, and served as a nurse there, 1971-1975.

She also held supervisory nursing posts at hospitals in Tupper Lake and Watertown. From 1987 to 2000, she served in Lantana, Fla.

Born in Watertown, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1955 and professed final vows in 1961. She held a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, and a master’s in nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Sister Marie James is survived by two sisters.

Burial was at Westminster Cemetery in Pennsylvania. A Memorial Mass for Sister Marie James was to be scheduled at a later date.
