Sister Mary Aquin Flaherty, S.C.

Sister Mary Aquin Flaherty, S.C., who served for 28 years at St. Bernard parish in Manhattan, died Jan. 29 at Kittay Senior Apartments in the Bronx. She was 98.

Sister Mary taught and later served as coordinator of religious education at St. Bernard, 1976-2003 and 1958-1959. She taught at St. Francis Xavier School, Manhattan, 1997-1999; Cathedral High School, Manhattan, 1967-1971; St. Brigid, Manhattan, 1954-1958; Ascension, Manhattan, 1945-1954; and St. Joseph, Yonkers, 1944-1945. She also served in Brooklyn.

She also served as a substitute teacher and a volunteer at schools in the archdiocese, 2003-2015.

Born in Scotland, she graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1942 and professed final vows in 1948.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, and a master’s in American history and Asian history from St. John’s University, Queens.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 4 in Mount St. Vincent Convent Assembly Room, the Bronx. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
