Sister Mary Buttacci, Teacher

Sister Mary Crucifix Buttacci, C.S.JB., who taught at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island for 14 years, died April 17 at White Plains Hospital. She was 95.

Sister Mary Crucifix was at St. John Villa, 1994-2008. She also taught in Manhattan at St. James School, 1992-1994 and 1976-1982, when she was also convent superior, and Our Lady of Loretto, 1945-1946.

Sister Mary Crucifix was provincial councilor, 1975-1979; superior and librarian of St. Dominic Convent, the Bronx, 1973-1974; general councilor, Rome, 1967-1972; mistress of postulants and mistress of girl boarders, Mount St. John, Purchase, 1964-1967.

She also served in Brooklyn, Glen Cove, New Jersey, Israel, Mexico and Chile.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in 1943 and professed final vows in 1949.

Sister Mary Crucifix earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.

Her sister, Gertrude, survives her.

Burial was April 24 in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
