Sister Mary Louise “Mamie” Jenkins, R.S.C.J., who taught for three years at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan, died Oct. 2 in Atherton, Calif. She was 94.
Sister Mary Louise taught at Convent of the Sacred Heart, 1964-1967.
She also served in Albany, Connecticut, New Jersey, Louisiana, Missouri and Maryland.
Born in the Bronx, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in Albany in 1948 and professed final vows in Rome in 1956. Raised Methodist, she converted to Catholicism during her college years at Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart.
In 1946, she became the first African American student to graduate from Manhattanville, where she earned two bachelor’s degrees in music. She held a master’s in music education from Columbia University.
A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 9 at Oakwood Chapel in Atherton, Calif. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery.
