Sister Raphael Marie Spano, C.S.JB.

Sister Raphael Marie Spano, C.S.JB., who served at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island for 37 years, died Feb. 25 at White Plains Hospital in White Plains. She was 85.

Sister Raphael Marie was a teacher at St. John Villa, 1998-2001, 1989-1996 and 1968-1980. She also served there as assistant librarian, 2006-2016, and an assistant in the high school development office, 2001-2006. She taught at St. Dominic’s School, the Bronx, 1984-1989.

She also served in New Jersey, Connecticut and Canada.
Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in 1954 and professed final vows in 1962.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.; and a master’s in education from Wagner College, Staten Island.

Her sister, Camille, survives her.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 28 in St. Anthony of Padua Church, West Harrison. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
