Sister’s Dedication

Posted

I have known Sister Mary Casey, O.P., formerly Sister Michael Marie, for 45 years (Obituary, Page 37). She was my sixth grade teacher and neighbor at St. Brendan’s School in the Bronx. I was fortunate to remain in touch with her until she passed away.

Sister Mary was the epitome of a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. She was dedicated to her Lord, her family, her friends, her students and most of all her religious congregation. Having the honor of attending her funeral, it was heartwarming to see how much she was loved by friends that dated back to her childhood and a family that loved her until the end.

It also afforded me the opportunity to see many of the Sisters that taught and led St. Brendan’s and many other schools in the archdiocese. To see them all together, taking care of each other, still ministering, living in community and having some laughs, truly warmed my heart. The Sparkill Dominicans buried three Sisters in the course of a week, but they continuously care for many others and can always use our help. Knowing all that they have done for so many students over the years, it’s the least that we can do.

May God bless these special women, and may we never forget them. I know I will never forget Sister Mary Casey.
