Two Priests Celebrating 50th Anniversaries of Ordination

Msgr. Philip Hill and Father Kevin Madigan, archdiocesan priests ordained in Rome in December 1970 after study there, are members of the ordination Class of 1971. A 50th anniversary story featuring other priests in the class ran in the July 1 issue. 

Msgr. Philip Hill, a retired priest who has resided in the Florida Diocese of Venice since 2019, assists at a parish in Punta Gorda. Before retiring as colonel in the U.S. Army, he was command chaplain at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain working at the Pentagon Army Chief of Chaplains Office during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He also served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. He was appointed executive officer for the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1998 and stationed at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. He earlier was deputy command chaplain for the Army in Europe, stationed at Heidelberg, Germany, and served at Fort Hood, Texas. He was pastor of St. Mary’s, Poughkeepsie, 1989-1994, and also was chaplain of the 77th Army Reserve Command at Fort Totten, Queens. He was with the Metropolitan Tribunal, 1975-1989, in Manhattan and Poughkeepsie. He served at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scarsdale, 1971-1973.

Father Kevin Madigan has served as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel-St. Thomas More in Manhattan since 2015. He was pastor of St. Thomas More, 2012-2015. He was earlier pastor of St. Peter’s, where he also was administrator for a year, and administrator of St. Joseph’s, both in Lower Manhattan. He also served as parochial vicar at Blessed Sacrament, Manhattan; St. Matthew, Hastings-on-Hudson; and St. Lawrence O’Toole, Brewster. He served in a ministry to alienated Catholics in Yorkville, Manhattan, and as a board member of the Archdiocesan Catholic-Muslim Dialogue.
