Father John F. Wymes, M.M.

Father John F. Wymes, M.M., who was a missioner to Africa for many years, died Aug. 19 at the Assisted Living Unit at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 94.

Most of his decades of mission service was in Africa, including pastoral ministry in Tanzania, and as headmaster of a secondary school in Kenya; also in Kenya, he later served as a hospital chaplain.
Father Wymes also served as chaplain at Phelps Memorial Hospital in North Tarrytown for one year ending in 1969; and in later years, starting in 1997, he celebrated Masses and assisted in the parish office at Our Lady of Lourdes in Malverne while in residence.

Father Wymes also served in Maryknoll development offices, including in Hempstead and Denver. In 1984, he participated in the Mission Renewal Program with the Society of the Divine Word in Nemi, Italy.

Born in Manhattan, he entered Maryknoll in 1944, made final vows in 1953 and was ordained for the Maryknoll Fathers in 1954.

In the 1970s, he served as an instructor in psychology and clinical pastoral education in Massachusetts.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Fallo.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 25 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center. Burial was at Maryknoll Society Cemetery.
