Father Michael O. Zunno, M.M.

Father Michael O. Zunno, M.M., who was a missioner to South Korea, died Oct. 25 at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Sleepy Hollow. He was 96.

Arriving at the Maryknoll Mission in South Korea in 1954, he did parish work. The next year, he was appointed pastor of the Maryknoll parish in Chung Pyong.

Father Zunno was founding pastor of a parish in Cheongju Diocese in 1960.

In 1961, he was appointed first consultor to the Maryknoll regional superior. In 1966, he became pastor of the Yeong Dong parish and acting vicar general for the diocese. In 1969, Father Zunno was appointed to administer the affairs of the Cheongju Diocese. He became pastor of Pu Kang parish in 1970.

In 1980, he was transferred to the Diocese of Pusan, where he assisted poor working families. In 1984, he became full-time chaplain at Maryknoll Hospital in Pusan. In 2003, he returned to the U.S. to live at Maryknoll for health reasons.

Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from Cathedral Preparatory High School, Brooklyn. After two years at Cathedral College, he entered Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, where he studied for the priesthood and was ordained in 1953.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 4 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Society Cemetery.
